Feb. 7, 2008 (Day 12)

Extempore: without premeditation or preparation

This pretty accurately describes how I start each day. My mind is muddy, and my eyes are cloudy. My motor skills are still a little rusted from hours of immobility. Even the act of stumbling down the stairs to my kitchen to prepare my much needed coffee is a routine of habit--my body goes through the motions without my mind engaging.

I know this for a fact after I once grabbed the large Brita pitcher instead of my tiny half & half carton from the fridge to pour into my coffee. (Honestly, how else do you mistake the bottom shelf for the top shelf and a gallon container of hard plastic for a half-pint cardboard carton?) Thankfully, I caught myself before I accidentally watered down my cuppa joe, but it made me chuckle to realize that no, truly, my brain is not functioning until I finish that large, red mugful of caffeine.
