Feb. 3, 2008 (Day 8)

Perquisite: a benefit in addition to a salary

Six years ago I was working on the copy desk of a newspaper in East Texas. Being in a newsroom on 9/11 was an incredibly unique experience, and it is part of why I no longer interact with the news in any form. A year later, I moved out to DC for a new editing job. I arrived Sept. 9, 2002, at an office four blocks from the White House. My mother was less than thrilled about my decision.

I was promoted four times in my first year at that new job, straight up to management...which made me immediately want to leave the job. It took a couple years before I managed it, though. And even then the job I was being offered (the one I have now) was a dicey on-again, off-again affair with the interview. It was a government contractor gig, and I'd only worked full-time office jobs before. I was very nervous making the jump. But I am so glad I did.

This photo represents my biggest "perq": I work from home. Every day. In my PJs. Rock on!

...I have been so spoiled by this job, I can't imagine leaving it any time soon.
