DailyPhotos > Kerry Ellis  > Galleries > Word of the Day
I've seen, and been inspired by, many "photo a day" projects, so I thought I'd try one myself, with my own little grammarian spin: create a photo using a Word of the Day gadget on my Google homepage for guidance and inspiration. And what better day than January 27, my thirtieth birthday, to begin such an undertaking? (Okay, maybe new year's day, but I was too lazy to bother then.) This project is also to help keep me thinking and creating images the way DGrin's Last Photographer Standing contest has challenged me to do--a challenge I've found really enjoyable and creatively stimulating. Wish me luck (and perseverance) in this endeavor!

Kerry Ellis > January 31, 2009 (Day ... it doesn't matter anymore!) Blog: a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writerPosting here for those who requested it. Be afraid: I have started a blog. I can't promise regular postings, though I hope to make it somewhat useful for folks when I do manage it. Here's to the rest of 2009!Sláinte!Edit: You'd think I learn to post about lighting when there are photographers in the audience. ^_^ This shot is simply the setting sun coming through my living room windows (yes, my windows rock!). The windows made the gobo. I barked some orders to the model (nicely--but we were in a hurry because the light was fading fast) so her face would be in the right spot of light. I'll post a set-up shot of the flash lighting we later used tomorrow on l'blog.
Kerry Ellis > January 27, 2009 (Day 367) Wanton: behaving lewdlyIt's my birthday, and I celebrated with some cake! ^_^Unfortunately, this also signals the last day of my photo-a-day project. :(Looking at my image count, I'm disappointed in myself. I averaged just over half the quantity I should have had at this point. On the other hand, I have nearly 200 photos that I wouldn't have had without this project. :)It's been quite an eventful year. I experienced a quick death of a burgeoning romance, driving around teeny roads in the United Kingdom, slipping down rocks in Moab, having a boss fired and not replaced, and a good run in the DGrin Challanges. In the coming year I'm already facing an interview for a job I've wanted for quite a while and planning a fantastic trip to Stockholm, Helsinki, and St. Petersburg. I wonder what else lies ahead?I'm really going to miss this daily project. I've been struggling with whether to continue it or not. I kept up with it so poorly, I'd hate to follow the same pattern a second year running. I debated starting a "biweekly photo" project. I've thought about starting a blog, especially since I have a few shoots coming up. In the end, I still haven't made up my mind.Regardless of where I go, I've enjoyed where I've been. You all in this community have kept me going. Your compliments and encouragement have been so welcomed and appreciated. Thank you for egging me on and following me here. It's been grand!
Kerry Ellis > January 26, 2009 (Day 366) Vacuous: inanely foolishMy new nekomimi (literally "cat ears") hat arrived today, and I'm so in love with it. I've been wearing it inside my house ever since it arrived. ^_^Well, today is technically my last day for this project (it was a leap year), but I'm going to prolong it one more day. I started this on my birthday, and I want to end it on my birthday, which isn't until tomorrow. I'll reflect on the year tomorrow.
Kerry Ellis > January 23, 2009 (Day 363) Sallow: unhealthy lookingJust playing around with Photoshop.
Kerry Ellis > January 22, 2009 (Day 362) Aye, Ay: As an affirmative response to a question: Yes; even so. Common dialectally, and in nautical language; the formal word used in voting ‘yes’ in the House of Commons; but not used for ‘yes’ in modern educated speech or writing, except as an archaism.Okay, not from today, but I just finished processing all my photos from inauguration day 2009, and I really wanted to share. ^_^
Kerry Ellis > January 15, 2009 (Day 355) Kinetic: movingWhee! :DEDIT: Wow, I didn't expect so many comments on the lighting! Since there are so many, I thought I should share this very simple set-up. I placed my SB800 behind me on the back of the couch, the head at 90 degrees (pointing straight toward the camera). I triggered it remotely with the on-camera pop-up flash. Pop-up flash exposure compensation was set to -3.0. SB800 was zoomed to 28mm with 1/10 output (set through the camera menu). I had no other lights on; I was shooting in the dark, literally. The hard part was tossing my hair at the right moment since I was shooting with the timer. ^_^
Kerry Ellis > January 11, 2009 (Day 351) Hinky: Nervous, uneasy, suspect, questionable; also: unreliable, not working properlyI was going to use Dictionary.com's word, but I liked the OED's better. ^_^This is an outtake from a photobooth variation I've been working on today.
Kerry Ellis > January 10, 2009 (Day 350) Fastidious: hard to pleaseReading a book about Edward Steichen. Getting inspired. Experimenting with light.
Kerry Ellis > January 9, 2009 (Day 349) Eclectic: varying in styleGuh...this idea took so much time to put together today. O_OI did this because I don't really have one set fashion style; it all depends on my mood of the day. Apparently, this turns me into a completely new person when meeting others. On several occasions, I have met someone one week while wearing my hair down, then seen them less than a week later while wearing my hair up, whereupon they reintroduce themselves to me. I always smile politely, say my name, and remind them we met only a few days ago. The person in question always looks confused for a moment, blinks, then exclaims, "Oh! Yes. Wow, you look different with your hair up."I figure with this talent and my penchant for picking up accents and foreign languages, I'm missing out on a career as an international spy somewhere.
Kerry Ellis > January 8, 2009 (Day 348) Daunt: cause to lose courageMy homage to photogmomma. ^_^I had decided to run some errands today and meet up with a friend, but I reconsidered my plans when it started snowing. I love snow, but I do not like driving in it. Unfortunately (or, since I had plans, thankfully), it only snowed for about five minutes before the sun came out again.
Kerry Ellis > January 7, 2009 (Day 347) Candor: honestyPlaying around with lighting...This word actually applies to my day today. The publication I work on is run mainly by me and my managing editor; we make a great two-person team and enjoy working with each other. We've long had an agreement that if either of us ever even thought about leaving the publication, we'd let the other know because it would have such an impact on us. I had to make that call today. It was very difficult, but I'm glad I held up my end of the deal.
Kerry Ellis > January 6, 2009 (Day 346) Beleaguer: force to quit; to surround or besetIs there some age after which you're no longer allowed to play with your food? ^_^
Kerry Ellis > January 5, 2009 (Day 345) Abstinent: self-restrainingNew Year's Resolution #2,058.Really, why deny Godiva?
Kerry Ellis > January 4, 2009 (Day 344) Zealous: very enthusiasticDesperation shot. Yay!
Kerry Ellis > January 3, 2009 (Day 343) Yegg: burglar or safecrackerI used to have a large padlock. I have no idea where it's gone. Perhaps pinched? What a strange word. Dictionary.com offered very little in terms of its etymology—just some conjecture. If OED fails me, I will be very disappointed ... and even more curious about this word's origins.
