DailyPhotos > Kerry Ellis  > Galleries > Word of the Day
I've seen, and been inspired by, many "photo a day" projects, so I thought I'd try one myself, with my own little grammarian spin: create a photo using a Word of the Day gadget on my Google homepage for guidance and inspiration. And what better day than January 27, my thirtieth birthday, to begin such an undertaking? (Okay, maybe new year's day, but I was too lazy to bother then.) This project is also to help keep me thinking and creating images the way DGrin's Last Photographer Standing contest has challenged me to do--a challenge I've found really enjoyable and creatively stimulating. Wish me luck (and perseverance) in this endeavor!

Kerry Ellis > Feb. 1, 2008 (Day 6) Mien: demeanor; also, aspect; appearance I had so many thoughts (and so much fun) while shooting this, where to start?I have always wanted to do one of those photo booth strip images, and while this isn't a true replica, this is how the image popped into my head after I read this morning's word. I realized I didn't have any true photos of just my face--and I began to think of how one's appearance really has so much variation because we all have so many different expressions. Plus I love to emote in front of the camera. It's why so many of my LPS entries feature me as a model (well, that and I'm easier to bribe with chocolate). I chalk it up to the years I spent in theatre. I actually majored in acting for two years in college, and I loved every moment of it. I could even cry on cue! Believably. :PI also kept thinking of The Three Faces of Eve while shooting this, even though there are four faces. Even though my name isn't Eve. Perhaps I have Bette Davis eyes, though?...Yeah, I kind'a thought it was a stretch, too. But, hey, you get four photos for the price of one today! That has to count for something.
Kerry Ellis > Jan. 31, 2008 (Day 5) Tailor-made: Made by a tailor; esp. said of women's garments of a heavier type, close-fitting, and plain in style Looks like that WW talk may be influencing a few of us...I mentioned to a friend recently that I finally wore my little black dress out, and he asked if it was because I finally had the occassion or because it finally fit. (He apparently knows how we women like to horde a few things in hopes they'll fit again...some day.) Thankfully, in this case it was a matter of having the occassion. I'm not big into soirees that require little black dresses, so this beauty rarely sees the light of day. Poor thing. So I give you "Pop!" to prove that I am silly, damn it, and I am not full of angst and melodrama all the time. And that I can work with color! Albeit stylized color. :P
Kerry Ellis > Jan. 30, 2008 (Day 4) Canorous: melodious; musical I used to have what I call "ESP dreams" frequently when I was younger; they occur a bit less often now: dreaming a mundane scenario only to have it occur in reality a few days or weeks later, with verbatim dialogue. I like to think I have some latent psychic superpower (I am, after all, a geek), and today's word may very well prove it.I actually thought of this photo concept two days ago and was thinking about attempting it. When I woke up this morning and saw the word on my Google gadget, I had to laugh. I have the power to influence Google! Mua-ha-ha!Except...I'm realizing that my first four days doing this make me look like a really depressed person. I'll have to capture something soon that doesn't make people think I'm reaching for sleeping pills minutes after I post here.Anywho, this is "The Way You Play Me." Kudos to anyone who can name the song illustrated. ;) The lyrics are very pertinent. (And the notes on my arm were there for the photograph--no PS there. Only the notes coming off the arm and flowing onto the table were added in PS.)
Kerry Ellis > Jan. 29, 2008 (Day 3) Sylvan: pertaining to woods or forests I have always loved this word. I wished I could sneak out to one of my favorite areas this afternoon for today's photograph, but it is rainy and overcast...and I'm much too busy with actual work.I then thought about processing a photo from that magical little grove that I took about two weeks ago, but I figured that would be cheating. Thus I dragged out this mask from my closet, where it has been sadly hanging since I made it for an LPS creation. A good, nature-loving friend of mine recently saw that dryad photo and fell in love with the mask. I told her it was hers, so very soon this elaborate creation will find some space on a loving wall in her home.
Kerry Ellis > Jan. 28, 2008 (Day 2) Misprision: a wrongful act or omission The "omission" part of today's definition really speaks to how I bungled up a portion of my birthday yesterday. I'm not sure why, but I have the toughest time voicing what I want in my important relationships. I think, perhaps, I'm afraid there will be backlash, so I more often than not keep what I want to say to myself. Which nearly always ends up being detrimental for me, because it smolders somewhere inside until it burns through. There was a tiny flare-up yesterday. Why couldn't I have just said what I wanted instead of omitting it entirely from conversation? I talked all around the issue, using every combination of words save the simplest and most direct that were actually running through my mind. Bah.If only I could learn this tactic with my job, where I never can seem to keep my mouth shut at the right times, I'd...well, I'd probably be below the radar more than I already am. But I'd also be a heck of a lot less happy in my position. ...sort how I feel right now in my current relationship.
Kerry Ellis > Jan. 27, 2008 (Day 1) Indelible: incapable of being removed or erased Well, welcome to day one. When I first read this word, I thought of the quaint, popular, alliterative "indelible ink," but my one and only tattoo did not pop into my mind. Perhaps it's because I woke up to a new decade in my life today: 30. I've been contemplating all morning how I feel about reaching this age milestone in my life, and I'm...apathetic. I don't feel the crisis or mortality I've heard other women bemoan upon reaching this age. On the other hand, I feel a tiny sense of loss that I've now permanently left my twenties behind, but in an unusual sense: like now I'm supposed to really be an adult. Which, to be honest, may never happen in my life. Talk to me about anything I'm passionate about and you'll swear I'm twelve years old again.Trying to pinpoint what turning thirty means to me, this word seemed very auspicious, and perhaps that's why this is the image that raised itself in my mind when I read the word this morning. I like that: my existence and who I am will be impossible to erase. Screw mortality. Happy birthday to me! Here's to another year of indelibility.
