DailyPhotos > Kerry Ellis  > Galleries > Word of the Day
I've seen, and been inspired by, many "photo a day" projects, so I thought I'd try one myself, with my own little grammarian spin: create a photo using a Word of the Day gadget on my Google homepage for guidance and inspiration. And what better day than January 27, my thirtieth birthday, to begin such an undertaking? (Okay, maybe new year's day, but I was too lazy to bother then.) This project is also to help keep me thinking and creating images the way DGrin's Last Photographer Standing contest has challenged me to do--a challenge I've found really enjoyable and creatively stimulating. Wish me luck (and perseverance) in this endeavor!

Kerry Ellis > October 1, 2008 (Day 249) Slugabed: one who stays in bed until a late hour How I wish I could spend this week with the covers pulled over my head. Work is simply horrendous right now. Anybody want to hire an editor?"Wake Me Some Other Day" is what I titled this in my head and aptly fits my current mood. Blargh.
Kerry Ellis > September 28, 2008 (Day 246) Panache: dash or flamboyance in manner or style An excerpt from my shoot today for DSS9. How I wish I could actually process my entry. This matches my vision for the concept more closely: that of the goddess Aurora right before she wakens. I have another set of eyelashes for Hespera, the Goddess of Dusk, for the counterpart to this, but it took me five hours just to get one shot I could enter SOOC. One of those spent just trying to get the cursed eyelashes on.Fake eyelashes make wonderful photo props. But OMG, they are a $%@!*& pain in the %$!# to glue on. I was so blasted annoyed by the time I finished applying these for Aurora, I just didn't want to go through the headache all over again for Hespera. Another day, perhaps. To cheer myself up, I ordered a Holga and some film for the upcoming Moab trip. Want to try something just fun and different while out capturing breath-taking landscapes. I can't wait to have it in my eager little hands. Plastic fantastic, baby!
Kerry Ellis > September 27, 2008 (Day 245) Capitulate: to surrender under agreed conditions Isn't that what love actually is?Older photo because things are a bit of a blur right now. Need to work a bit tomorrow as I "wasted" most of today. That included a very lovely lunch with the amazing Schmoo and Travis, and we got to meet David (RogersDA) along with his wife and daughter. The weather was horrible—sheeting rain by the time we were ready to go to our cars, of course—but the lunch was faboo as always. Sunflower, and the company, never disappoints.I finally managed to undo the screws hiding my RAM in my other laptop and was able to install the extra 1GB of memory I'd had for the past week. Apple put some serious might into locking those teensy screws. I still have marks in my palm from the end of my screwdriver because I had to push down so hard. Backed up files with Time Machine and transferred more stuff over to the external HD as well. Trying to free up space for all the Moab pictures the lappy will need to hold after next week!Note that I don't look like this in reality (yet). This shot has had heavy PP done, including major liposuction. ;)
Kerry Ellis > September 25, 2008 (Day 243) Edify: to instruct and improve So brain-dead from work, no synapses are left to fire for a jolt of creativity. If you ever wanted to know how to be a courtier during the Italian Renaissance, Castiglione's The Book of the Courtier would be perfect for you. It sounds droll, but it's actually an amusing read. Of course, I find most medieval literature to be humorous, particularly Icelandic sagas, so it may be just my skewed thought process that makes it so.I thought I had a copy of Machiavelli's The Prince for this shot instead, but I was surprised not to find it on my shelves. At least this book is from the same time period. :PAnd, yes, many of my books retain such haphazard placeholders in them. Heh.
Kerry Ellis > September 24, 2008 (Day 242) Numismatics: the collection and study of coins Fake macro photography with a handheld reversed 50mm lens is really tough. I suspect buying a real macro lens would not make macro photography any easier, though. I always run out of breath trying to hold it so long until I find my focus!
Kerry Ellis > September 23, 2008 (Day 241) Scion: a descendant; an heir "We are not amused."Except I am. Nothing like hats on cats to brighten up my day. :DSketch definitely thinks he owns everything in the house. I probably perpetuate this by referring to him as "the little prince" within earshot. (Note the crossed paws.)On an entirely different note, the full definition of today's word makes me wonder at the logistical reasoning skills of whoever adopted this word. From Dictionary.com:1. A detached shoot or twig of a plant used for grafting.2. Hence, a descendant; an heir. "Hence?" Really? Who in their right might said, "Tra-la-la, I'll graft this bit of plant. By jolly, this reminds me of my neighbor's son!"I get the offshoot (ha!), but I don't think it was a "hence."
Kerry Ellis > September 22, 2008 (Day 240) Undulate: to move in waves What's this? An update? No, you're not hallucinating.Things at work exploded into a a super-not-fun-unhappy mess, and there's no real sign of it improving for at least another month. I am burnt out. My project here fell to the wayside as a result, and I hate that. Not just this project, but my photography in general. Before this past weekend, it had been three weeks since I touched a camera. I was simply too exhausted and brain-dead, and suddenly picking up my camera felt like more work, which is a horrible feeling.Needless to say, I'm looking forward to the shootout in Moab in two weeks. I need to get away. And I need to fall back in love with photography. It keeps me alive and sparkly.
Kerry Ellis > August 27, 2008 (Day 214) Naif: a naive or inexperienced person Five days?? I was gone five days? Ack! Sorry, folks. I had my head down in processing for DSS, then pouting, then researching (lots of friggin' researching) for the next challenge idea. I had no idea so many days had gone by without me posting! So, yes, you get another boxer shot. But, to make it up to you, I put together a tutorial on my processing for this series. Creating the tutorial took longer than processing five images together. I'm beat!
Kerry Ellis > August 22, 2008 (Day 209) Hobson's choice: a choice without an alternative Origin (from Dictionary.com): The origin of the term Hobson's choice is said to be in the name of one Thomas Hobson (ca. 1544-1631), at Cambridge, England, who kept a livery stable and required every customer to take either the horse nearest the stable door or none at all.I wish I were faced with Hobson's choice right now. Above is a work-up of my second DSS idea. That fire is kicking my butt. I've been messing with this on and off all day. Rawr.So it's either this, or just stick with my other entry, which, frankly, looks more "done" to me. Meh. Time for sleep. Thanks for all the kind comments, everyone! I tried another tactic with for the fire and have been tweaking all day. I think the fire's improved, but it ain't perfect yet.
Kerry Ellis > August 21, 2008 (Day 208) Juju: an object superstitiously believed to embody magical powers You mess with her, bad juju indeed. ;)A sneak peek from the photoshoot we finally managed to pull together today. This is a test image for processing and to see if my second DSS idea could work. I'm thinking it will, which makes me super happy.Special thanks to my friend who let me put all sorts of crap on her and put up with my posing directions for hours. Nothing like taking a beautiful girl and making her look dirty and mean. ^_^
Kerry Ellis > August 19, 2008 (Day 206) Aestival: of or belonging to the summer Had some leftover heartsicles in the freezer. Seemed a shame to waste them. Except I was too lazy to walk around the other side of building where the sun was actually shining.Photoshoot delayed. ::pout::
Kerry Ellis > August 18, 2008 (Day 205) Knell: the stroke of a bell tolled at a funeral I don't own a bell, and my creative energy is focused so much on lighting right now I couldn't spare brain power figuring out how to photograph sound. So you get some somber processing of my ear with earrings I'd likely wear to a funeral (which I hope I don't have to do for many, many years).I have been reading Strobist all day, and my head is spinning. I successfully bribed my friend for the photoshoot (DSS idea #2), and the lighting is what will make the shot. I bought my flash this weekend. Yeah, we'll see how a total newb does with a multi-light set-up. I'm nervous and excited all at once.
Kerry Ellis > August 17, 2008 (Day 204) Philter: a love potion Help! Your opinion needed. :)Above are two variations of my first idea for the DSS Mega Challenge. My original concept included the rippled pool at the bottom, but now I wonder if it isn't stronger without it. Which do you prefer? If viewing them side by side is distracting, you can view Option A and Option B separately. Now to finish bribing my friend for help wth concept #2.Oh, and the answer to yesterday's question was a flash! I've had a strobe, but no flash, so I broke down and got the flash yesterday. A whole new thing to learn...
Kerry Ellis > August 16, 2008 (Day 203) Go-around: runaround; deceptive or delaying action especially in response to a request Dictionary.com failed me by giving me a repeat word from a couple weeks ago, so the OED wins out today.I got a new toy today, one I'd been debating for more than a year and putting off acquiring. Can you tell what it is? :)Sketch was at first very bored by the whole idea of helping me test the toy out, but he warmed up a bit afterward and posed for me. However, it wasn't long before he grew tired of the whole ordeal and started making faces at the camera. ^_^Now to put this toy to use for my mega challenge concept!
Kerry Ellis > August 14, 2008 (Day 201) Lackadaisical: lacking spirit or liveliness Time for my cliché "sad girl by the rainy window" shot. :)I love this word, even though rainy days do not make me feel this way. I always get a bit excited when the light in my room suddenly grows dark because a storm cloud has pushed its way in front of the sun. And instead of counting the seconds between thunder rolling and lighting flashing, I count how many roof-shuddering booms it takes before Sketch bolts upstairs like he has a demon on his tail to wriggle his way beneath the tight space under my sleepr sofa in the office. He puts on a brave face and bullies Britta most of the time, but he's just a little scaredy cat when it comes to thunderstorms. I find this hopelessly cute, especially when he recovers enough to come back downstairs and hop in my lap for some comfort.

Slugabed: one who stays in bed until a late hour

How I wish I could spend this week with the covers pulled over my head. Work is simply horrendous right now. Anybody want to hire an editor?

"Wake Me Some Other Day" is what I titled this in my head and aptly fits my current mood. Blargh.
