DailyPhotos > Kerry Ellis  > Galleries > Word of the Day
I've seen, and been inspired by, many "photo a day" projects, so I thought I'd try one myself, with my own little grammarian spin: create a photo using a Word of the Day gadget on my Google homepage for guidance and inspiration. And what better day than January 27, my thirtieth birthday, to begin such an undertaking? (Okay, maybe new year's day, but I was too lazy to bother then.) This project is also to help keep me thinking and creating images the way DGrin's Last Photographer Standing contest has challenged me to do--a challenge I've found really enjoyable and creatively stimulating. Wish me luck (and perseverance) in this endeavor!

Kerry Ellis > August 13, 2008 (Day 200) Chichi: affectedly trendy Tried out a new lighting technique and effed it all up by missing the focus. So you get a more "abstract" illustrator-y version of what I'd imagined. Lesson learned for next time. And this is your final reminder to go vote for your favorite image in the DGrin Challenge poll. :)
Kerry Ellis > August 12, 2008 (Day 199) Old faithful: a faithful person or trusted adherent; (also) anything reliable, dependable, or trustworthy When all else fails, photograph the cat. Or, from Sketch's point of view, "Are we done yet?"I intentionally chose the OED's word today to (1) give myself a little creative break and (2) give Sketch screen time since he hadn't been featured in a while. Like...a whole week! :DAnd this is your reminder to go vote for your favorite image in the DGrin Challenge poll. :)
Kerry Ellis > August 11, 2008 (Day 198) Provenance: origin; source It all starts with an idea...More experimentation and just plain fun. I would love it if my imagination had a power button I could push at any time. :DETA: Yippee! I made it to the voting round for the recent DGrin Challenge. Now go vote for your favorite image! I won't be offended if you don't think it's mine. :)
Kerry Ellis > August 10, 2008 (Day 197) Exalt: to praise, glorify, or honor Another from Mull, featuring Schmoo.I'm so disenchanted with my images from this trip now, I don't even want to process them anymore. I'm hoping this will pass soon, but I'm uncertain it will. I was so proud before of what I came back with, but I keep getting put to shame by the truly outstanding landscape photography out there and it makes me want to throw up my hands and quip, "Why bother?"I still don't understand how to best process landscape images. I see it done well, and I think I get what was done, but I just don't achieve the same results. I think the likely culprit is impatience.
Kerry Ellis > August 8, 2008 (Day 195) Vexillology: the study of flags People study flags enough that they have their own "ology"? Who knew?Just playing around today. Trying out things I've always been curious to try.It occurred to me as I was working on this that it could be interpreted as the effects of having much too many shots with that glass. Totally not the goal (there was no goal beyond experimentation for this), but amusing nonetheless. Try looking at it without thinking that now. ;D
Kerry Ellis > August 5, 2008 (Day 192) Inscribed: written upon or in something Sometimes imagination takes a little work. ;) Surprisingly, writing upside-down and left-handed on my own hand was challenging, but nowhere near as difficult as I'd thought it'd be.I'm using the OED's word today as Dictionary.com had a hiccup in its randomness and used the verb version of a word I shot just last week. I do not feel the need to shoot it again. (The word was vituperate, in case you're curious.)Day 2 of conference over.
Kerry Ellis > August 4, 2008 (Day 191) Obeisance: an expression of deference Up in Annapolis this week for a conference. Woo-hoo...pictures from a hotel room.
Kerry Ellis > August 3, 2008 (Day 190) Brummagem: cheap and showy; also, spuriousFickle: false, deceitful, treacherous Today's photo depicts gore and part of a woman's torso wearing a bra. It does not show violence or sexually explicit material. However, to prevent anyone getting in trouble during Monday's lunch break browsing, I wanted to give fair warning.Okay, warning's out of the way. Click here to view today's image. You can leave comments below if you have them.I took this image a week ago, but I've been putting off processing it. In a literal sense, it fits with today's first word (I made that wound with items I had in the house, so it's definitely cheap and showy), but I love how ironic it is when paired with OED's word for today, which is why it is also included above.I'm really not happy with the processing, but that's more to do with the fact that I really need to reshoot this, but I don't want to unless I have a model. So I like the concept, but I need to redo the execution so it actually looks like what's in my head. Maybe someday. :)Oh, I call this "Cross My Heart..."
Kerry Ellis > August 2, 2008 (Day 189) Sapient: wise; sage; discerning Trying out a different processing style for an upcoming shoot I hope comes to fruition. This is based on the style of Joey Lawrence, who had an article in the most recent issue of Rangefinder.I mentioned Joey L. today during another super fabulous lunch at Sunflower with the even more fabulous Schmoo and special guest Travis, her husband. I was met with blank stares. This, however, does not detract from their coolness factor. They're one pretty cool couple. :)
Kerry Ellis > August 1, 2008 (Day 188) Panoply: a splendid or impressive array I have a healthy collection of bumps and scars gained from growing up, as I was a bit of a tomboy and always a klutz. My affinity for bumping into things has never left, and with my fair skin, I bruise like crazy. Usually I just discover a new bruise on my body on a nearly daily basis, with absolutely no recollection of what I might have done to get it.During a particularly clumsy bout while dating somebody (I was doing house repairs, enough said), I had a couple friends express concern that he was beating me up. Especially when my stories sounded truly silly, because my clumsy stunts are sometimes just so ridiculous it's hard to believe they're true.Case in point, I burned myself while painting. Yeah. I had taken a light fixture down in my bathroom to make it easier to just paint behind it instead of around it, but it was my only light source, so I brought in a lamp and removed the shade to give myself enough light to see. I forgot the lamp was there, and in one downward stroke, my forearm smacked down hard on the bare bulb. Really, really bad burn.I am an epic klutz. One of my oldest nicknames is "Grace."
Kerry Ellis > July 31, 2008 (Day 187) Egress: the act of going out or leaving; exit Okay, yes, today's image has absolutely nothing to do with today's word. But it's a picture I took today, and after skipping the past three days, I figured an unrelated picture was better than no picture at all. So there ya' go.I got a bit caught up the past few days revamping my site. I still need to do some tweaks and redo the slideshow--again--but it's functioning and doesn't look lopsided. So I'm letting it be until I forget the headache that is customization enough to want to do it again.ETA: Alpinkatze, good catch! It was bugging me, too, and I was just hoping no one else would notice it. :) The reason it's so matte is because it's actually a green apple with a curves adjustment layer to make it red, but that blew out the highlights to this bizarre magenta color, which I then toned down through cloning. Guess it needs more work to bring the shine back!
Kerry Ellis > July 27, 2008 (Day 183) Extol: to praise At a Christmas a couple years ago, my mother gifted me with two, thick, heavy scrapbooks stuffed cover to cover with all my old report cards, school assignments, short stories, certificates, medals, awards, and some photos of me growing up. From grade school through to my senior year at high school. I look back through them every now and again with humor and amazement. I was a bit of an overachiever—(mostly) straight-A student, enrolled in gifted and honors programs—and I wonder how I didn't get beat up during those times. As I was photographing some old swim meet ribbons (seriously, I'm amazed at what my mother managed to rescue during my growing up), Sketch decided the ribbons better suited him instead. And I really couldn't argue. ^_^That first place was for the backstroke, I distinctly remember. I was going so fast, I reached the wall a lot sooner than during practice and smacked my head on it really hard. Didn't slow me down too much. :P
Kerry Ellis > July 26, 2008 (Day 182) Diadem: a crown Something nice and light-hearted after yesterday's images (I will process the second concept tomorrow--it'll take more than the two hours left in the day today).Though I have confessed to some girly-girl habits, I do not, alas, own a tiara. So my thoughts turned immediately to the most well-known tiara wearer: Audrey Hepburn. I absolutely adore her. But today's word made me realize I have not yet bought the DVD version of Breakfast at Tiffany's...and still own a special VHS though I no longer have a VCR. I own just about all her movies, but Breakfast is not my fave. Thankfully, my favorite movie of hers—and favorite movie of all time—also has her sporting a crown. I did not have time to rewatch Roman Holiday today as I had plans to go out and see a movie, but I will definitely watch it again tomorrow.I always hope the ending will be different... :)
Kerry Ellis > July 25, 2008 (Day 181) Sempiternal: everlasting; eternal I woke this morning to the faint, warm, loving sound of my mother's voice saying, "Hi, honey," as if to wake me gently from my slumber. I smiled before my heart suddenly began to race, and I bolted upright in fear.I believe in the supernatural, and I find hope in the thought that loved ones will try to pass on their final goodbyes before they depart this world. Having worried about my mother's health for awhile, I was deathly afraid some accident had happened back home in Texas, and I began to cry, thinking the last I would hear my mother's voice was when I was half asleep and faintly aware.Thankfully, nothing had happened. My mother is fine. But this will explain why my first thought upon reading today's word was "love." And though I can be a sappy cynic, I am a cynic, and I immediately discarded the idea since emotions are not eternal. I began trying to think of things that were eternal, and for every idea, my literal brain would conclude that none of it was truly everlasting. Trees? No, they die. Earth? It's changing; you really think it will be here forever? The sun? It's going to explode some day.Having backed myself into a logical corner, I decided to search the internet for quotes about eternity to see if someone wiser than me had figured something out. Funnily enough, every quote was about love. We're a sentimental race, ain't we?This led then to the formation of two concepts, one of which I will shoot to tomorrow (as I didn't quite expect the processing of this one to take quite this long). The second came from one of the quotes, which happens to be from my much adored Oscar Wilde: "If you are not too long, I will wait here for you all my life."And there you have it. This is "I Will Wait..."
Kerry Ellis > July 24, 2008 (Day 180) Melange: a mixture Going for a literal interpretation today, based on this word's roots: Melange derives from Old French meslance, from mesler, "to mix," ultimately from Latin miscere, "to mix."I love to bake, but this new eating lifestyle makes this challenging. Vegan baking is hella hard—at least when it comes to making something taste good. The first two muffin recipes I tried were "meh." Today's turned out pretty good. Much numminess. I will definitely be making this recipe again!I also got off my duff and shot yesterday's word today.

Chichi: affectedly trendy

Tried out a new lighting technique and effed it all up by missing the focus. So you get a more "abstract" illustrator-y version of what I'd imagined. Lesson learned for next time.

And this is your final reminder to go vote for your favorite image in the DGrin Challenge poll. :)
