DailyPhotos > Kerry Ellis  > Galleries > Word of the Day
I've seen, and been inspired by, many "photo a day" projects, so I thought I'd try one myself, with my own little grammarian spin: create a photo using a Word of the Day gadget on my Google homepage for guidance and inspiration. And what better day than January 27, my thirtieth birthday, to begin such an undertaking? (Okay, maybe new year's day, but I was too lazy to bother then.) This project is also to help keep me thinking and creating images the way DGrin's Last Photographer Standing contest has challenged me to do--a challenge I've found really enjoyable and creatively stimulating. Wish me luck (and perseverance) in this endeavor!

Kerry Ellis > July 23, 2008 (Day 179) Vituperation: the act or an instance of speaking abusively to or about; sustained and severely abusive language Shot this a day late, but I definitely had the idea on the same day as the word. Had a date last night and never got around to making this concept a reality. But I liked the concept so much, I shot it the next day. I particularly like how weird this looks following the previous image. :DI'm always afraid when shooting something like this that someone will knock on my door with a delivery that needs to be signed for. And I'm always thankful when I do crazy stuff like this for Maybelline eye make-up remover.
Kerry Ellis > July 22, 2008 (Day 178) Gamine: an urchin; also, a mischievous girl or young woman Testing out an idea for the DGrin Challenge. I was going for "nymph."The masking is very messy. After four hours working on this, I finally said, "Screw it--it's my daily and a rough draft of an idea. Let it go." If I decide to pursue this, I'm definitely going to change my approach to adding the bokeh spots. This way was too much a PITA. :X
Kerry Ellis > July 21, 2008 (Day 177) Supernumerary: exceeding a necessary or usual number I consider myself a unique woman, but I freely admit that I exhibit "typical" female tendencies in some departments. Namely shoes and handbags. I have 30+ pairs of shoes and 10 handbags.Four years ago, I actually refused to own a purse because it was too girly. Then I met a very fashionable friend who indirectly influenced me. This also led to my first purchase of a pink piece of clothing, which soon led to these very girly pink flip-flops, replete with big, pink rhinestone flowers. Yeah, I'm such a girl.Edit: Give yesterday's image image some viewing love? SM's downtime buried it, poor thing.
Kerry Ellis > July 20, 2008 (Day 176) Insensate: lacking sensation or awareness Sometimes, even I don't understand the images my head comes up with. :PI call this "Fashion Senseless."
Kerry Ellis > July 19, 2008 (Day 175) Malinger: to feign illness or inability Practicing my "honey do" look for future relationships...To demonstrate how untrue this image is, one of my friends the other day asked if I could rewire an old phone for her to work with a modern jack. When I asked if she had wire strippers and electrical tape on hand, she said no. So I told her I'd bring mine along when next I visited. She replied, "I figured you'd have whatever was needed." :P
Kerry Ellis > July 18, 2008 (Day 174) Tatterdemalion: a person dressed in tattered clothing I love these shoes...perhaps a little too much. I keep forgetting to take them in to a shoe repair shop to see if they can be re-soled. Of course, I remember every time I reach into my closet to wear them and curse myself anew for not already taking them in.I usually donate shoes or toss them if they're in a bad state, but I can't bring myself to part with these. I hunted for them forever, my Nine West, black satin, kitten-heel ballet flats. No other ballet flats will do.
Kerry Ellis > July 17, 2008 (Day 173) Anodyne: serving to relieve pain I had much more banal ideas for this word (a glass of wine, a bottle of Bayer), but I'm really enjoying this "extreme close-up" theme/series from the past couple days. I thought of how I usually lie down and close my eyes, placing a cloth over them to block the light, in order to relieve a persistent headache. I wanted to communicate a sense of peace and relaxation with today's photo. On an unrelated note...the most amusing part of my day: answering the door to be greeted by a young man who asked, "Um, is your mom or dad home?" Apparently, this recent vegetarian diet has stripped me of 15 years in two months' time! :P
Kerry Ellis > July 16, 2008 (Day 172) Mephitic: offensive to the smell; also, noxious It's late. I'm tired. Getting this in under the wire.Had a fantastic lunch with Schmoo today at a super-yummy vegetarian restaurant that I plan to frequent more often (oh, just count the redundancy). Then met up with another friend after work for some houseware shopping. So addicted to decorating...
Kerry Ellis > July 15, 2008 (Day 171) Fiduciary: relating to the holding of something in trust for another This actually ended up being easier to pull together than I thought when the idea first popped into my head. I may have missed my calling as a special effects make-up artist. :DI give you "Liplock."
Kerry Ellis > July 14, 2008 (Day 170) Cupidity: eager or excessive desire, especially for wealth Last week was sort of hellish where work was concerned, so I let this project sit idly by. Looks like it did some good, as I got a bit of inspiration back for today's image. Yay!Who doesn't like a little cold, hard cash?Yes, those are euros. I thought I'd used them all up before coming back home from my trip, but I found a secret stash of leftover bills in my bag. Thank goodness, or else I wouldn't have been able to take this picture. I never have cash on me.
Kerry Ellis > July 6, 2008 (Day 162) Palaver: idle talk; also, to talk idly Had an idea for today, but was I swept away by movies, so here's another from vacation. These were our guides on the Isle of Mull, John and Kevin (L to R). I spoke more with John, who was very talented at painting watercolors in miniature while waiting for us crazy photographers to wrap up at a location. He had his own travel watercolor kit that was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. I asked if he would paint one to give away, and a few weeks ago I received in the mail my own small watercolor from him. It made me cry. He is the sweetest man.In this shot I was resting in the van talking with John, and I raised my camera to take a picture while he was leaning--and he immediately stood up straight and posed. I laughed and lowered my camera, asking to lean in again as that was the picture I was trying to get. He happily obliged. :) I love this picture because it brings back in a bright swoosh the feel and memory of the place, and the love I had for the company and for being there.
Kerry Ellis > July 4, 2008 (Day 160) Dapple: a small contrasting blotch; also, to mark with spots As it was overcast all day today, an image of the sun dappling some surface was not in my list of options. Thankfully, one of my kitties makes a great substitute model...as long as I don't get too close to her with the camera.
Kerry Ellis > July 3, 2008 (Day 159) Tutelage: guardianship; protection; also, instruction I keep forgetting to set my ISO back to 100, dang it.Thank God this week is over. It has been particularly hellish where work is concerned. Yay for federal holidays!I hope everyone (stateside) has a great 4th! :)EDIT: My weekend just started with a bang! Somebody bought a print of one of my photos—and from this gallery! I photograph because I love it, but this is just so gratifying. Thank you, dear customer! You've made my week. :)
Kerry Ellis > July 2, 2008 (Day 158) Laconic: using or marked by the use of a minimum of words I apologize that this project is updating sporadically at the moment. Work is just very hectic right now, so I'm finding it tougher than usual to wiggle this into my day.I think of this image as a MySpace shot: lighting courtesy of the bathroom fixture and camera held at arm's length. No cropping.
Kerry Ellis > June 30, 2008 (Day 156) Indigent: extremely poor Trying to return to the idea that stories can be simple. In other news, I have an earache, to which I seem to be especially susceptible. I get them repeatedly. Been dizzy all day as a result, which is never fun.

Vituperation: the act or an instance of speaking abusively to or about; sustained and severely abusive language

Shot this a day late, but I definitely had the idea on the same day as the word. Had a date last night and never got around to making this concept a reality. But I liked the concept so much, I shot it the next day. I particularly like how weird this looks following the previous image. :D
