Word of the Day

I've seen, and been inspired by, many "photo a day" projects, so I thought I'd try one myself, with my own little grammarian spin: create a photo using a Word of the Day gadget on my Google homepage for guidance and inspiration. And what better day than January 27, my thirtieth birthday, to begin such an undertaking? (Okay, maybe new year's day, but I was too lazy to bother then.) This project is also to help keep me thinking and creating images the way DGrin's Last Photographer Standing contest has challenged me to do--a challenge I've found really enjoyable and creatively stimulating. Wish me luck (and perseverance) in this endeavor!

Blog: a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writerPosting here for those who requested it. Be afraid: I have started a blog. I can't promise regular postings, though I hope to make it somewhat useful for folks when I do manage it. Here's to the rest of 2009!Sláinte!Edit: You'd think I learn to post about lighting when there are photographers in the audience. ^_^ This shot is simply the setting sun coming through my living room windows (yes, my windows rock!). The windows made the gobo. I barked some orders to the model (nicely--but we were in a hurry because the light was fading fast) so her face would be in the right spot of light. I'll post a set-up shot of the flash lighting we later used tomorrow on l'blog.

  • January 27, 2009 (Day 367) Wanton: behaving lewdlyIt's my birthday, and I celebrated with some cake! ^_^Unfortunately, this also signals the last day of my photo-a-day project. :(Looking at my image count, I'm disappointed in myself. I averaged just over half the quantity I should have had at this point. On the other hand, I have nearly 200 photos that I wouldn't have had without this project. :)It's been quite an eventful year. I experienced a quick death of a burgeoning romance, driving around teeny roads in the United Kingdom, slipping down rocks in Moab, having a boss fired and not replaced, and a good run in the DGrin Challanges. In the coming year I'm already facing an interview for a job I've wanted for quite a while and planning a fantastic trip to Stockholm, Helsinki, and St. Petersburg. I wonder what else lies ahead?I'm really going to miss this daily project. I've been struggling with whether to continue it or not. I kept up with it so poorly, I'd hate to follow the same pattern a second year running. I debated starting a "biweekly photo" project. I've thought about starting a blog, especially since I have a few shoots coming up. In the end, I still haven't made up my mind.Regardless of where I go, I've enjoyed where I've been. You all in this community have kept me going. Your compliments and encouragement have been so welcomed and appreciated. Thank you for egging me on and following me here. It's been grand!

  • January 26, 2009 (Day 366) Vacuous: inanely foolishMy new nekomimi (literally "cat ears") hat arrived today, and I'm so in love with it. I've been wearing it inside my house ever since it arrived. ^_^Well, today is technically my last day for this project (it was a leap year), but I'm going to prolong it one more day. I started this on my birthday, and I want to end it on my birthday, which isn't until tomorrow. I'll reflect on the year tomorrow.

  • January 15, 2009 (Day 355) Kinetic: movingWhee! :DEDIT: Wow, I didn't expect so many comments on the lighting! Since there are so many, I thought I should share this very simple set-up. I placed my SB800 behind me on the back of the couch, the head at 90 degrees (pointing straight toward the camera). I triggered it remotely with the on-camera pop-up flash. Pop-up flash exposure compensation was set to -3.0. SB800 was zoomed to 28mm with 1/10 output (set through the camera menu). I had no other lights on; I was shooting in the dark, literally. The hard part was tossing my hair at the right moment since I was shooting with the timer. ^_^

  • January 9, 2009 (Day 349) Eclectic: varying in styleGuh...this idea took so much time to put together today. O_OI did this because I don't really have one set fashion style; it all depends on my mood of the day. Apparently, this turns me into a completely new person when meeting others. On several occasions, I have met someone one week while wearing my hair down, then seen them less than a week later while wearing my hair up, whereupon they reintroduce themselves to me. I always smile politely, say my name, and remind them we met only a few days ago. The person in question always looks confused for a moment, blinks, then exclaims, "Oh! Yes. Wow, you look different with your hair up."I figure with this talent and my penchant for picking up accents and foreign languages, I'm missing out on a career as an international spy somewhere.

  • January 7, 2009 (Day 347) Candor: honestyPlaying around with lighting...This word actually applies to my day today. The publication I work on is run mainly by me and my managing editor; we make a great two-person team and enjoy working with each other. We've long had an agreement that if either of us ever even thought about leaving the publication, we'd let the other know because it would have such an impact on us. I had to make that call today. It was very difficult, but I'm glad I held up my end of the deal.

  • January 2, 2009 (Day 342) Xanthous: yellowishI just don't know. This is what my head came up with. The only thing I can think of is my subconscious interpreted "yellow" as "cowardly."Creeped me out working on it, regardless. I can't sleep with doors open, or at least appear to be open from my vantage point on the bed. Makes me think things are preparing to leap out from the dark, gaping maw the open door creates. I've never outgrown this fear.Didn't use the new camera because I needed a wide angle lens, and currently my wide angle is a DX lens. Saving up for new glass this year!

  • December 31, 2008 (Day 340) Ultimate: furthest or highestFirst off, I hope everyone is enjoying ringing in the new year. :)Now, have you clicked the info button? Notice anything different? My parents—wonderous, amazing, spoiling parents that they are—bought me a Nikon D700 for my Christmas/birthday present. I had no words and actually cried from the surprise and shock. I know it wasn't in their budget anymore than it was in mine, but they have always stood behind my pursuits 100%, even when I decided to first be a theatre major back in college.I spent four hours just reading the manual and customizing buttons, menus, and anything else I could to get my shiny new toy up and running. Today I tested the awesome interval feature. This image is a blend of five images shot five seconds apart on a very, very windy day today. I love this camera!Mom, Dad, I know you pop in here every so often, so thank you, thank you, thank you again. I love you both so much. Thank you for supporting my wild, crazy, and eclectic pursuits.

  • December 4, 2008 (Day 313) Curio: something unusual that is collectedMy father has been Indiana Jones for much of my life, right down to the trademark hat. By day, he is a meteorologist, but during his off hours in summer, he has been an archaeologist helping excavate Mayan ruins in Belize. He had participated in local digs around San Antonio when I was a child, and I remember accompanying him on a couple, digging up my own arrowheads. So he shouldn't have been surprised when I grew older and started asking to accompany him on his digs in Belize. But he never took me seriously until I pressed him on it, and last year I finally went.I spent a week excavating a fascinating site, then my mother came down and swept us away to resorts for a week of recovery. During that time, we visited many other Mayan sites, including Lubaantun, famous for its supposed discovery of a crystal skull. I didn't realize that until we had arrived, and the site keeper gave us a fantastic tour of the grounds and told a wonderful story about the scandal of the skull. Afterward, we followed him and our guide from the resort back to his small office where he showed us a collection of clay whistles he had made, replicas of Mayan artifacts. We'd had such a great time, and his whistles were actually very well made, that we each purchased one, mine being this lovely turtle. As we left, my mother asked if I would remember how to play it, to which I replied, "Of course, you just blow into its butt." My father couldn't conceal his snort and chuckle. :)

Sue me. :PThis weekend I made an onerous drive to shoot a wedding with expert Lynne Hulbert, encroaching upon the world of wedding photography. I had 98% certainty before making this journey that I never wanted to make a living shooting weddings. I'm now 100% certain. It was much harder than I had anticipated, and I'd anticipated something pretty grueling.Lynne was a great sport letting me tag along, despite my non-smiling demeanor because I was so exhausted after the 10-hour drive and a restless evening before the wedding due to an amorous couple in the room next door. Once I got this shot, I assured her it was all worth it, every minute. And I still believe that. This shot makes my heart melt.I like to learn from all walks of photography, and I was able to learn a lot by observing Lynne and helping her however I could. I'm so grateful to her for the experience.
