Word of the Day

I've seen, and been inspired by, many "photo a day" projects, so I thought I'd try one myself, with my own little grammarian spin: create a photo using a Word of the Day gadget on my Google homepage for guidance and inspiration. And what better day than January 27, my thirtieth birthday, to begin such an undertaking? (Okay, maybe new year's day, but I was too lazy to bother then.) This project is also to help keep me thinking and creating images the way DGrin's Last Photographer Standing contest has challenged me to do--a challenge I've found really enjoyable and creatively stimulating. Wish me luck (and perseverance) in this endeavor!

July 25, 2008 (Day 181) Sempiternal: everlasting; eternal I woke this morning to the faint, warm, loving sound of my mother's voice saying, "Hi, honey," as if to wake me gently from my slumber. I smiled before my heart suddenly began to race, and I bolted upright in fear.I believe in the supernatural, and I find hope in the thought that loved ones will try to pass on their final goodbyes before they depart this world. Having worried about my mother's health for awhile, I was deathly afraid some accident had happened back home in Texas, and I began to cry, thinking the last I would hear my mother's voice was when I was half asleep and faintly aware.Thankfully, nothing had happened. My mother is fine. But this will explain why my first thought upon reading today's word was "love." And though I can be a sappy cynic, I am a cynic, and I immediately discarded the idea since emotions are not eternal. I began trying to think of things that were eternal, and for every idea, my literal brain would conclude that none of it was truly everlasting. Trees? No, they die. Earth? It's changing; you really think it will be here forever? The sun? It's going to explode some day.Having backed myself into a logical corner, I decided to search the internet for quotes about eternity to see if someone wiser than me had figured something out. Funnily enough, every quote was about love. We're a sentimental race, ain't we?This led then to the formation of two concepts, one of which I will shoot to tomorrow (as I didn't quite expect the processing of this one to take quite this long). The second came from one of the quotes, which happens to be from my much adored Oscar Wilde: "If you are not too long, I will wait here for you all my life."And there you have it. This is "I Will Wait..."
July 24, 2008 (Day 180) Melange: a mixture Going for a literal interpretation today, based on this word's roots: Melange derives from Old French meslance, from mesler, "to mix," ultimately from Latin miscere, "to mix."I love to bake, but this new eating lifestyle makes this challenging. Vegan baking is hella hard—at least when it comes to making something taste good. The first two muffin recipes I tried were "meh." Today's turned out pretty good. Much numminess. I will definitely be making this recipe again!I also got off my duff and shot yesterday's word today.
July 23, 2008 (Day 179) Vituperation: the act or an instance of speaking abusively to or about; sustained and severely abusive language Shot this a day late, but I definitely had the idea on the same day as the word. Had a date last night and never got around to making this concept a reality. But I liked the concept so much, I shot it the next day. I particularly like how weird this looks following the previous image. :DI'm always afraid when shooting something like this that someone will knock on my door with a delivery that needs to be signed for. And I'm always thankful when I do crazy stuff like this for Maybelline eye make-up remover.
