Word of the Day

I've seen, and been inspired by, many "photo a day" projects, so I thought I'd try one myself, with my own little grammarian spin: create a photo using a Word of the Day gadget on my Google homepage for guidance and inspiration. And what better day than January 27, my thirtieth birthday, to begin such an undertaking? (Okay, maybe new year's day, but I was too lazy to bother then.) This project is also to help keep me thinking and creating images the way DGrin's Last Photographer Standing contest has challenged me to do--a challenge I've found really enjoyable and creatively stimulating. Wish me luck (and perseverance) in this endeavor!

July 31, 2008 (Day 187) Egress: the act of going out or leaving; exit Okay, yes, today's image has absolutely nothing to do with today's word. But it's a picture I took today, and after skipping the past three days, I figured an unrelated picture was better than no picture at all. So there ya' go.I got a bit caught up the past few days revamping my site. I still need to do some tweaks and redo the slideshow--again--but it's functioning and doesn't look lopsided. So I'm letting it be until I forget the headache that is customization enough to want to do it again.ETA: Alpinkatze, good catch! It was bugging me, too, and I was just hoping no one else would notice it. :) The reason it's so matte is because it's actually a green apple with a curves adjustment layer to make it red, but that blew out the highlights to this bizarre magenta color, which I then toned down through cloning. Guess it needs more work to bring the shine back!
July 27, 2008 (Day 183) Extol: to praise At a Christmas a couple years ago, my mother gifted me with two, thick, heavy scrapbooks stuffed cover to cover with all my old report cards, school assignments, short stories, certificates, medals, awards, and some photos of me growing up. From grade school through to my senior year at high school. I look back through them every now and again with humor and amazement. I was a bit of an overachiever—(mostly) straight-A student, enrolled in gifted and honors programs—and I wonder how I didn't get beat up during those times. As I was photographing some old swim meet ribbons (seriously, I'm amazed at what my mother managed to rescue during my growing up), Sketch decided the ribbons better suited him instead. And I really couldn't argue. ^_^That first place was for the backstroke, I distinctly remember. I was going so fast, I reached the wall a lot sooner than during practice and smacked my head on it really hard. Didn't slow me down too much. :P
July 26, 2008 (Day 182) Diadem: a crown Something nice and light-hearted after yesterday's images (I will process the second concept tomorrow--it'll take more than the two hours left in the day today).Though I have confessed to some girly-girl habits, I do not, alas, own a tiara. So my thoughts turned immediately to the most well-known tiara wearer: Audrey Hepburn. I absolutely adore her. But today's word made me realize I have not yet bought the DVD version of Breakfast at Tiffany's...and still own a special VHS though I no longer have a VCR. I own just about all her movies, but Breakfast is not my fave. Thankfully, my favorite movie of hers—and favorite movie of all time—also has her sporting a crown. I did not have time to rewatch Roman Holiday today as I had plans to go out and see a movie, but I will definitely watch it again tomorrow.I always hope the ending will be different... :)
