Word of the Day

I've seen, and been inspired by, many "photo a day" projects, so I thought I'd try one myself, with my own little grammarian spin: create a photo using a Word of the Day gadget on my Google homepage for guidance and inspiration. And what better day than January 27, my thirtieth birthday, to begin such an undertaking? (Okay, maybe new year's day, but I was too lazy to bother then.) This project is also to help keep me thinking and creating images the way DGrin's Last Photographer Standing contest has challenged me to do--a challenge I've found really enjoyable and creatively stimulating. Wish me luck (and perseverance) in this endeavor!

Feb. 20, 2008 (Day 25) Factitious: artificial; not authentic or genuine Okay, I thought Dictionary.com had made a typo when I read this word. "Fictitious" I've heard, but "factitious?" Really?I'm not feeling too well today, so my creativity is off napping somewhere. Meh. So you get Sketch again. Or, as I like to think of him, Disgruntled Intellectual Cat. It was that or a box of Splenda. (Tangent: Can one ever be just "gruntled?")I was going to try to feature Britta today instead, but she was much less tolerant of the glasses. Or close proximity of the big, glass eye that is my camera lens.
Feb. 19, 2008 (Day 24) Abominate: to detest intensely Death Cat says, "Die, evil scum!"I totally messed up the exposure, composition, and everything else imaginable on this shot. It is extremely hard to snap a photo of Death Cat at close range while trying to avoid Death Cat's claws. I salvaged what I could, because I feel social responsibility for warning the world that Death Cat has spawned. That bit of orange you see is a tiger hand puppet we use for roughhouse play so he can scratch and bite the heck out of it and not my hand. Death Cat ray is set to "kill" when the tiger hand puppet is spotted.
Feb. 18, 2008 (Day 23) Sine qua non: an indispensable thing When I first read this word, I tried to think of what was indispensable in my life. As I pondered this, I realized I could get by without my house, my possessions, my precious cats. So I began to think about less tangible things: love, passion, happiness. But I thought that these, too, were things anyone could do without (though no one might wish to actually be without them).I couldn't really think of something that was honestly, truly, and completely indispensable for life--except, you know, actually living. I thought more personally, and I realized my sight was something I considered pretty necessary for my life. I know I could survive should I go blind--and having poor eyesight, this does concern me--but my career would end. I'm an editor. I need to be able to read for my job. Sure, I could find other ways to make a living, but I love what I do. I love editing. I love my job and this career. It would be disheartening, to say the least, to lose my sight and be unable to pursue this career path further.Yes, I would also hate to lose my ability for photography, but I consider hobbies I love to be more replaceable than jobs I love.In the end, my sight is very important to me. It is the most nearly indispensable thing I have.Side note: Please use your eyes (and fingers) to vote in two important contests going on at DGrin, if you haven't already: Last Photographer Standing and Photo of the Year 2007.
