Word of the Day

I've seen, and been inspired by, many "photo a day" projects, so I thought I'd try one myself, with my own little grammarian spin: create a photo using a Word of the Day gadget on my Google homepage for guidance and inspiration. And what better day than January 27, my thirtieth birthday, to begin such an undertaking? (Okay, maybe new year's day, but I was too lazy to bother then.) This project is also to help keep me thinking and creating images the way DGrin's Last Photographer Standing contest has challenged me to do--a challenge I've found really enjoyable and creatively stimulating. Wish me luck (and perseverance) in this endeavor!

Feb. 16, 2008 (Day 21) Virago: an ill-tempered, overbearing woman; also, a woman of great strength and courage So few times in my life have I really, fervently wished I owned a Viking helmet. This would be one of them. Instead, I'll have to content myself with listening to "Flight of the Valkyries" (or "Kill the Wabbit," if you prefer) and reading a bit of the Nibelungenlied. And revisiting an old idea.I forget what I was reading the other day that had this word pop up in it. I looked it up at the time and tried to file it away for future use, as it's a fantastic word. I'm happy the gadget reminded me of it today. :)
Feb. 15, 2008 (Day 20) Ennui: a feeling of weariness and dissatisfaction arising from lack of interest Okay, someone at Dictionary.com has a twisted sense of humor to follow yesterday's word with today's. It made me laugh, so I must be twisted as well.Actually, this word will always have a humorous connotation for me because of Gilmore Girls (God, I miss that show--only TV I ever watched). In some episode, Michel is moping around claiming he has ennui. Soon after, Lorelai goes into the kitchen to see Sookie dejectedly stirring a pot. The comedic timing is perfect as Lorelai asks what's wrong and Sookie heaves a great sigh, replying, "I don't know. It might sound a little weird, but I think I've got --"Lorelai: "Oh, no." Sookie: "--ennui."Lorelai then turns to Michel and accuses him of explaining ennui to Sookie, who tends to think she's coming down with whatever someone else has.So I always giggle or grin when I hear this word now. Doesn't come through in the picture, does it? :P
