Word of the Day

I've seen, and been inspired by, many "photo a day" projects, so I thought I'd try one myself, with my own little grammarian spin: create a photo using a Word of the Day gadget on my Google homepage for guidance and inspiration. And what better day than January 27, my thirtieth birthday, to begin such an undertaking? (Okay, maybe new year's day, but I was too lazy to bother then.) This project is also to help keep me thinking and creating images the way DGrin's Last Photographer Standing contest has challenged me to do--a challenge I've found really enjoyable and creatively stimulating. Wish me luck (and perseverance) in this endeavor!

Apr. 17, 2008 (Day 82) Roister: to revel; to carouse HEEEEEEY YOOOOOUUUU GUUUUUYYYYYyyyysss!! (Oh yeah, I just flashed my Generation X badge.) AKA: When inspiration fails you, photograph the cat.I was trying to get Sketch to rear up on his hind legs while attacking a toy to make it look like he was dancing (a shot I managed in the past on my old P&S), but he was having none of it. Lazy cat didn't want to do more than roll around on his back and swish his claws through the air. However, the expressions I captured on his face are priceless and had me rolling in laughter as I filtered through them for processing.I tried processing this with my usual photo tricks, but nothing really fit the mood my crazy cat was displaying. This effect is a happy accident from one of my standard steps: using the Threshold adjustment layer to find my black and white points. Since I had a black cat on my white couch (cough), this is what happened when I turned the adjustment layer on. The cartoony feel just fit so well, I went back to it and tweaked it for the final image.So...yeah, I crossed the graphic design line, but I love it. To assuage the purists, I attempted more smoke shots last night. ;)
Apr. 16, 2008 (Day 81) Objurgate: to scold or rebuke sharply Taking this photo made me want to watch Dirty Dancing again. And I think I will. I need a happy, silly movie to recover from the anime series I was watching earlier. The story was so amazingly well told, and the concept was so touching. It was about postmen who deliver the last words of those who have died. According to the postman the story follows, while alive people will lie. Once dead, nothing but the truth remains. She delivers those truths: love, sadness, regret, anger, revenge. It is all honest.Stupid series made me cry three times from some of the scenarios they set up. Amazing, amazing story. But I need something a little peppier to end the day with. :)
Apr. 15, 2008 (Day 80) Miasma: a thick vaporous atmosphere, often noxious My first attempt at photographing smoke. Frustrating. Difficult. Much more elaborate lighting set-up than I have ever bothered with or tried. But, wow! Is it ever hypnotizing and a little addicting.I'm going to keep my set-up set for a couple days and try it again. Plus, this experiment has the added bonus of making my office smell awesome because of the incense I'm using. :D
